How to use the ISE Foundation Hobbies and Sports Lesson Plans

Vocabulary

  • Start with the ISE Foundation Hobbies and Sports vocabulary activity. You can first play a game to elicit language the students already know. Check out some vocabulary games you could use in this blog post. It might be a good idea to use Vocabulary Tennis or Vocabulary Categories. Then, give students the vocabulary handout and go through it with them. Get them to use the vocabulary in a personalised way by asking questions and getting them to talk to their partner. They should also add any new language they need. You could also ask students to test each other on the language that is included. Finish up the class with another vocabulary game – perhaps charades or twenty questions using the language on the handout.

Speaking, Reading and Writing

  • For the next class, use the ISE Foundation Hobbies and Sports lesson. In this lesson, the students have to read about unusual sports, and then complete an ISE Foundation style reading task. They then write an essay about an unusual sport that they know about. This will all help consolidate the language of hobbies and sports and prepare them for the exam. Click on the link for a lesson plan describing how to use this resource.

Listening

  • For the third class, use the ISE Foundation Hobbies and Sports Independent Listening activity. This is an ISE Foundation Independent Listening Task 2 style activity where the students listen to a description of a sportsperson. You can use the listening text as practice for the independent listening phase of the exam and as a springboard for further work about describing people. Click on the link for more ideas about using this resource.

Speaking and Listening

  • Finally, use the ISE Foundation Conversation Question Cards about Hobbies and Sports to revise all the language you have covered and to prepare for the exam. These can be used again and again throughout the language course.
